The ping command uses ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) to see if a remote host can be reached, how long it takes, and whether any packets were lost (Kaczanowski, 2021). The traceroute command usually sends three packets and tests each “hop.” A hop is when a packet is passed from one router to another (Kaczanowski, 2021).

I found my ping results very interesting. The average time for Google was 74ms, news.com.au was 161ms, and yahoo.co.jp was 299ms. This makes sense because Google is here in the US, while the other two are in Australia and Japan. It is not a significant amount of time (just mere milliseconds), but it makes sense that it would take a little longer. Also, there was no packet loss for any of them, so this was a good sign.

The traceroute results were also intriguing. It takes more hops to get to the Australian and Japanese destinations. Google took 7, news.com.au took 14, and yahoo.co.jp took 18. The times were mostly consistent. I recognize my own router there as well.

As I wrote this reflection, I did some more tests and noticed slightly faster times for both ping and traceroute. I remember I was having some network issues when I did this before, and everything was loading slowly. This is a great illustration of how useful these commands can be to diagnose network issues. Since they all took longer, it proves it was an issue with my network and not one specific host. Also, if you are having trouble getting any connection at all, using ping or traceroute can determine if there is a problem with your network and not just the browser setting or the specific host you are trying to access. Google is a great choice to see if you can ping to because it rarely goes down.
